The Ministry of Power is preparing for a change in leadership as Chief Adebayo Adelabu officially announced his resignation. While his departure marks the start of his campaign for the Oyo State governorship, he isn’t leaving without offering a parting vision for the country’s energy future.
In a personal letter to President Tinubu, Adelabu confirmed he will step down on April 30. He explained that this timing allows him to follow the rules of the 2026 Amended Electoral Act while pivoting toward a dream he’s had since his days at the Central Bank: leading his home state of Oyo.
Adelabu used his exit to make a strong case for a major structural shift. He urged the President to consider appointing a Coordinating Minister for Energy. His logic is simple: the current system is too fragmented. To truly fix Nigeria’s power issues, he believes the country needs one central leader to bridge the gap between power, gas, and renewables. For him, it’s about making sure the progress made so far doesn’t stall due to a lack of coordination.
Adelabu’s spokesperson, Bolaji Tunji, shared that the Minister feels a deep sense of gratitude for the chance to serve. As he shifts his focus to the 2027 elections, his resignation leaves the President with two big tasks: finding a new face for the power sector and deciding if it’s finally time to unify Nigeria’s energy leadership under one roof.
